The labourers were in the pit digging when the loose mud around the pit came crashing down on them around 10 am, eyewitnesses said.
On realising that the men were buried alive, the other labourers raised the alarm and also alerted the police control room. Subodh (22), a migrant labourer from Bhagalpur, Bihar, died by the time he was rescued. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Three others sustained injuries, police said.
Meanwhile, labourers began a protest carrying Subodh’s body and demanded that the company compensate his family.
The project’s contract had been awarded to Indu Projects by the National Building Corporation Company Ltd.
The SDM reached the spot and, together with police, pacified the crowd. Police registered a case of negligence against Indu Projects under Section 304 (a) of the IPC.
Manoj, a labourer said, “We all live on the work site along with our families. Subodh is survived by his wife and two children. How will they live now? We have been protesting since morning demanding that a compensation be paid to his family. Finally, the SDM promised to give the family Rs 3 lakh.”
