L-G takes up cleaning of Najafgarh jheel, 9-point action plan charted

After the Najafgarh drain and the Yamuna floodplains, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has taken up the cleaning of the Najafgarh Jheel on the Delhi-Haryana border.

Saxena chaired a meeting to devise ways to revive the lake, which was termed pivotal for the overall cleaning of the Yamuna in the capital where a nine-point future plan of action was charted out.

The major sources of pollution in the Najafgarh lake, Raj Niwas officials stated, including the huge quantity of domestic and industrial effluent coming from Gurgaon and ways to overcome the pollution and preserve the aquatic life were discussed at a meeting that coincided with the World Water Day.

“The L-G stressed the need for urgent action to prevent the discharge of nearly 110 MGD of domestic and industrial waste into the lake and called for seamless interstate coordination between Delhi and Haryana to address the issue,” Raj Niwas stated.

According to Raj Niwas, the L-G asked the Gurgaon administration to ensure that only treated effluent is discharged, in addition to directing the authorities to complete the cleaning and desilting of the Najafgarh drain up to Dhansa regulator by June 30, removing Hyacinth from the lake, its desilting and afforestation of the general area using native species of plants among others.
