Launching a fresh attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said the “PM wakes up every morning and says ‘I will put this person in jail, I will put that person in jail.’ Day and night, he thinks of who to arrest and put in jail”.

“They arrested me, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain… they did not even leave my PA alone, they jailed him too… Arre, aap pradhan mantri ho ya thanedaar? (Are you the PM or a police officer?)” he said.

“You are the PM, you should think about reducing the price of petrol, vegetables, milk… But our PM wakes up every morning with a motive to arrest someone… Is this how a Prime Minister should be? We don’t want such Prime Minister,” he added.

Speaking at a roadshow in support of Northeast Delhi Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar, Kejriwal urged residents to defeat ‘Rinkiya ke papa’ — alluding to a popular Bhojpuri number by BJP MP and candidate Manoj Tiwari.

Hugging Kumar, Kejriwal introduced him to the public saying, “On voting day, don’t look for the jhaadu (broom) symbol here, you have to vote for panja (hand)…”

Standing atop his car, Kejriwal’s 2-km-long roadshow wound through the heavily congested Bhajanpura main market towards Pushta road. Behind him was Kumar in another car. As the CM waved at the gathering, onlookers showered rose petals and burst firecrackers. Some people also gifted him a statue of Lord Ram and Sita and a mace.

Apologising to the public for arriving late for the event, Kejriwal said, “After coming out of jail, I have visited several states — Jamshedpur, Punjab, Lucknow… people are very angry with the BJP and the PM because of inflation, lack of jobs… our children are unemployed… Modi ji is not worried about these things…”

He also alleged the PM and BJP were trying to stop subsidies in Delhi. “Modi ji in an interview said free bus rides should not be given to women. Why? Modi ji, you should make bus and train (journeys) free for women but instead, you are saying these subsidies should be stopped. Till I am here, I will not let them stop any scheme,” he claimed. Assuring women, the AAP convener said he will implement the Mahila Samman Rashi scheme soon and they would get Rs 1,000.

Raising slogans of “Modi ji jaane wale hain, acche din aane wale hain”, “Jai Shi Ram” and “Jai Bajrangbali”, “25 May, BJP gayi”, Kejriwal ended his speech saying, “BJP is on its way out and the INDIA bloc will form its government on June 4.”

Kumar focused on local issues and urged people to vote for him if they wanted traffic-free roads and 24×7 water supply.

Residents in the area were divided on who to support.

Sharmila, a resident of Bhajanpura A block, said, “I think Kejriwal has done a lot of work in Delhi due to which the life of the public, especially women and children, has improved… (we have) free bus rides, electricity… now they are also going to give Rs 1,000 (to eligible women).”

Mohit, a resident, disagreed: “Just because he is a Bihari doesn’t mean people will choose him…” Both Kumar and Tiwari are Purvanchali.
