To remove dark spots and decongest the area around Kashmere Gate Inter State Bus Terminal, the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has devised plans to revamp the key roads with aesthetic design, artwork and beautification under its streetscaping project.
The Indian Express, in a series on streetlights of Delhi in January, highlighted dark spots on Rajghat and Kashmere Gate flyover, roads and around the stretch.
Under this project, the department plans to remove dark spots, widen the road stretch, revamp foot overbridges, install CCTV cameras, create pedestrian-friendly spaces, install artefacts and statues for beautification, and increase green cover by planting different types of flowers, sitting plazas and selfie points.
Officials said the department plans to extend the streetscaping work on the Shantivan stretch until Chandgi Ram Akhara Xing, Kashmere Gate flyover from near Hardev Lal Marg to Hazari u-turn. It will also work on Lothian Road. The stretch is 4 km long and will get a revamp.
“The key objective is to reduce jams for smooth travelling, enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility, provide better connectivity to nearby areas and beautify the surrounding areas. We have also decided to widen the existing foot overbridge at Ring Road to provide proper pedestrian passage to connect Ring Road, ISBT and the Metro station,” said a senior PWD official.
There are also plans to construct sidewalks, pavements, streetlights, signals, and CCTV cameras for better pedestrian movements and traffic management and surveillance. “This area is a project for chain snatching and theft, so addressing dark spots is one of our main aims to improve pedestrian movement and safety,” said the official.
The PWD also looks to plant plants for greenery. These areas connect to the North Delhi areas like Delhi University and Civil Lines, where the L-G and chief minister houses are located. Also, tourist places like Red Fort and Jama Masjid are here so that it will be frequently used by the delegates visiting the city for G-20 meetings.
The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 75 crore, and work on the tendering process is undergoing, and soon the tender will be floated, said officials.
