On Saturday afternoon,a little past 3,the fate of the juvenile accused in the Delhi gangrape case was sealed by the Juvenile Justice Board. In a court room occupied by not more than 10 persons, including the victims parents, the magistrate is learnt to have read out, three years at a safety home.
The sentence came eight months after he was arrested for the brutal gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedic student on the night of December 16.
While the parents of the victim walked out within minutes of the judgment, expressing unhappiness over the sentence handed out to the accused,it took officers almost an hour to bring out the convict and escort him to a correction home where he will be serving his sentence.
Sources said since the convict is now over 18 years old and has been convicted of rape and murder,he would be housed separately in the home.
Though he turned 18 a few months ago,the accused was not shifted to Tihar Jail as he was a juvenile at the time of the offence.
Scores of police personnel were deployed outside the JJB chambers and their numbers were doubled within minutes of the judgment being pronounced. Protesters, claiming to be part of the December 16 kranti group surrounded the area shouting slogans against the order.
A police officer said there was a delay in getting the juvenile out of the JJB court as they were waiting for additional security personnel to arrive as they feared for safety of the convict.
Around 4 pm,police officers along with juvenile welfare officials, escorted the convict into a police van covered on all sides, making it impossible for mediapersons to catch a glimpse of the convict. An orange towel covered his face and he was hurriedly pushed inside the van.
The van was escorted by two police vehicles till the correction home where the convict will be serving out his three-year sentence.
Till date,no relative has come to visit the juvenile. His family lives in a village in Uttar Pradesh but they are too poor to afford the journey to Delhi. I am sure they must have been informed about the conviction by others who are closely following the case, a police officer said.
