JNUSU office-bearers get showcause notice

The JNUSU has been protesting against a new draft Inter-Hall Administration (IHA) manual which, they claimed, “seeks to implement a massive fee hike in JNU hostels, along with regressive provisions such as curfew time, hefty fines and punishments for protests, and a complete disappearance of reservation policies in hostel allotment”.

The JNU administration issued showcause notices to the students’ union president, vice-president and a few other students Friday, following recent protests on campus.

Issuing the notice, the university proctor said it was in response to a security complaint received by the chief proctor that a group of students were involved in locking Dean of Students Umesh Kadam’s office.

The administration also issued a statement, claiming there are no changes in curfew timings and dress code in the dining hall in the new hostel manual as alleged by JNUSU”.

While the administration said there was “no massive hike”, new hostel charges have been put out by the administration. For example, service charges have been increased from Rs 0 to Rs 1,700 a month. Similarly room rent for single room has been increased from Rs 20 per month to Rs 600 per month, and for a double-sharing room from Rs 10 per month to Rs 300 per month. The mess security amount, which is refundable, has been increased from Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000.
