An injury-plagued Jeev Milkha Singh says he plans to cut down on the number of tournaments he plays next year to regain fitness. “I usually play around 36 tournaments a year, but next year I only plan to compete in around 30. This means I will cut out a month from my playing schedule.

I know at this age I can’t take the same risk I used to take five years back. I have learnt this the hard way. Last year,I was playing tournaments after taking painkillers, that’s not a condition I plan to repeat. So my priority is to be fit throughout the year and for that I am considering hiring a physical trainer who can travel with me,” Jeev said.

Injuries have taken their toll on the ace golfer, laid low by a shoulder injury in the first half of the year and then forced to withdraw halfway through the Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour in November after sustaining a back injury.

Jeev was speaking on the sidelines of a press conference in Delhi,an event he rushed to attend, right after attending an accupuncture session.

“Honestly, right now I’m trying everything. I’m obviously visiting my doctors and receiving a lot of physiotherapy. But I am also going for alternate therapies such as yoga. My doctors have prescribed complete bed rest.”

The rehabilitation process is aimed at getting Jeev in reasonable enough condition to play in the Royal trophy from January 7.

The regimen means that Jeev has not even picked up a golf club since the end of November. “On December 24,I will swing my club for the first time after November 26 and depending on what happens and how I feel and the doctor’s advise I will take a call. I have to see if my back can take the pressure of the whiplash that would be generated. So I will let everyone know on December 26 if I am ready to play or not,” he said.

“I am better now. At least I can sit for 20-30 minutes comfortably. So there is a good chance that I will play in the Royal Trophy.” Jeev concedes that his injuries have impacted his form and have seen him drop out of the PGA 2011. He will be seen in action predominantly on the European tour.

But Jeev admits there is a silver lining in his current predicament. Jeev, who celebrates his birthday on December 15,is enjoying spending time with his wife and year-old son. Something he says he did not get a chance to do when he was on tour. But while Jeev remains positive about things, smiling even as he gives umpteen bytes to the gathered reporters,he soon has his hands on his hips. “If I stand for any more time,my back is really going to start hurting,” he says.
