Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday announced the expulsion of three students on the charges of sexual harassment in two separate cases.

This includes the case where a research scholar was expelled after complaints from a professor that he sent her ‘intimidating’ text messages.

Action was also taken against two second-year undergraduates for allegedly sending text messages to the complainant, who happened to be the classmate of one of the accused. Officials said the two expelled students are from the Departments of social work and psychology.

Details of allegations are not known, along with the procedure followed by the enquiry committee. The complaint by the professor was reportedly received by the university a week ago,and that by the undergraduate student,in early February.

Senior university officials welcomed the decision claiming it would act as a deterrent to potential offenders. The university campus has also been declared ‘out-of-bounds’ for the expelled students.

Instead of the committee on sexual harassment, the proctorial board of the university looked into the matter. The university officials did not explain why the proctor had looked into the complaint.

Student bodies on the campus have been calling for the reorganisation of the sexual harassment committee,so that it can have elected members.
