Israeli diplomat attack: Chargesheet names Kazmi, says he met Iran Guards

The Delhi Police named Urdu journalist Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi in a chargesheet on the February 13 attack on an Israeli diplomat in the heart of the city.

The Delhi Police on Tuesday named Urdu journalist Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi in a chargesheet on the February 13 attack on an Israeli diplomat in the heart of the city. He is the only person arrested so far in the case.

The chargesheet, filed before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav, mentions Iranian nationals Houshang Afshar Irani,Masoud Sedaghatzadeh,Syed Ali Mehdian Sadr and Mohammed Reza Abolghasemi as suspects in the case. The court had issued open warrants against the four in March.

Four persons, including Israeli diplomat Tal Yehoshua-Koren and the driver of the embassy vehicle, were injured in the attack on the diplomat’s car.

The chargesheet alleges that Kazmi met members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in Iran when he travelled to that country in 2003. Mehdian Sadr and Abolghashemi met Kazmi in Iran in January 2011 and had come to India for a reconnaissance of the Israeli embassy in New Delhi.

Incidentally, when The Indian Express reported earlier this month that Kazmi had told investigators that the module behind the attack belonged to the Quds Force which conducts overseas operations for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, police had denied the report.

Kazmi has been charged under provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempt to murder. He has also been chargesheeted under the provisions of the Explosive Substances Act. He has been under arrest since March 6.

The prosecution had said that phone records had revealed that Kazmi was in contact with the other suspects. According to police,Houshang Afshar Irani, who was in India a number of times during 2011- 2012,was in contact with Sedaghatzadeh, arrested from Malaysia on terror charges on February 14.
