The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the city police whether they have concluded the investigation in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case. A division bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain asked the Delhi Police if they will be filing a fifth supplementary chargesheet. This comes after senior counsel appearing for Khalid Saifi, an accused seeking bail before the High Court, submitted that in June last year, police filed the fourth supplementary chargesheet in the case. "Take instruction and make a statement if the investigation is closed or will you continue. We will record it," the bench orally told the police's counsel. Saifi, a member of United Against Hate (UAH), and several others were booked under relevant provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly being the "masterminds" of the February 2020 riots. Violence had erupted during the protests in the city against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Fifty-three people were killed and over 700 injured in the riots.
