The Public Works Department (PWD) on Tuesday started a drive to inspect all the 102 flyovers under its jurisdiction in Delhi, paving the way for their revamp and beautification. The teams set up for inspection will have to submit reports on the current status of these flyovers by 12 pm on Thursday.
Officials said the PWD has constituted five three-member teams – comprising one executive engineer and two assistant engineers – who would take up the inspection work in North, South and East zones.
“The teams shall complete the inspection within two days and submit a report, flyover-wise, on March 6 by 12 pm to Chief Engineer (Flyover),” stated an order issued by the PWD on Monday.
The Chief Engineer (Flyover) will compile them and forward the same to the PWD Secretariat for necessary action by Thursday. The Special Secretary (PWD) will monitor the inspection work and timely preparation of reports, among others, said officials.
“Each team will inspect around 20 flyovers to check its condition and submit a report on the status of its cleanliness, tiling, painting, lighting and encroachment. Besides, officials will also mention other issues, if any, like if the stretch needs repair, how many potholes are there, if the main carriageway or central verge needs rehabilitation…,” said a senior PWD official.
Following this, the department will come up with a plan to repair, strengthen and beautify the flyovers.
Repair of roads and flyovers is one of the top priorities of the newly-formed BJP government in Delhi. In the run-up to the February 5 polls, senior BJP leaders — from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Amit Shah – have raised the issue poor road infrastructure under then AAP government and promised action.
The 100-day action plan of the PWD also mentions redevelopment and strengthening of 54 road stretches and about 200 km of stretch. The PWD maintains around 1,400 km of key roads of Delhi.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has approved a proposal to transfer a 13.23 km stretch of the Delhi-Rohtak Road (National Highway 10), from Peeragarhi Chowk to Tikri Border, to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for its upgradation.
Officials said PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has approved the proposal for the transfer of this key stretch that provides connectivity to Delhi and Haryana.
Singh, in a statement, said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the in-principle agreement of Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, I have approved and forwarded the proposal to NHAI for the transfer of the 13.23 km Delhi-Rohtak Road (NH 10) stretch from Peeragarhi Chowk to Tikri Border for its much-needed upgradation.”
This move will facilitate the upgradation of this crucial corridor into a world-class highway, said an official. “The step is aimed at ensuring the development of the stretch as per national highway standards, improving traffic flow and road conditions, and enhancing connectivity for thousands of commuters who use the stretch to travel between Delhi and Haryana daily,” the official added.
In his statement, Singh said that the double engine government is focused on ensuring smoother traffic flow, enhanced connectivity, and world-class infrastructure.
“Additionally, all national highways within Delhi are being identified for transfer to NHAI under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, further strengthening India’s highway network and reducing travel time for commuters,” he added.
“With seamless coordination between the Centre and the state, this initiative highlights the Modi government’s commitment to largescale infrastructure development, ensuring Delhi’s roads meet global standards and contribute to a stronger national highway network,” said an official.
The repair of Rohtak Road has been pending for a long time. Last year, the PWD had floated tenders to take up repair work on the stretch but it has been delayed.
