Robbery took place in the Pragati Maidan tunnel , SaturdayEven as several investigators were looking for the accused in the Pragati Maidan tunnel robbery case, it was one of the alleged conspirators who was earlier found at GTB hospital who led the police to other accused.
On June 23, a day before the robbery, police received information about a man with bullet injuries admitted to GTB Hospital. “When Vishal was asked about his injuries, he said he had gone outside to meet his friend Rahul but found two men fighting. The duo fired at each other and a bullet passed through Vishal’s leg and also hit his right hand. He had told us it was only a single bullet…” said an officer.
However, doctors at GTB Hospital told police that his body bore three gunshot marks. A police team was sent to the spot to check the victim’s version. “We inspected the site twice but found no pellets, or the accused. It was dubious that the man was shot in Burari but came all the way to GTB Hospital in East Delhi. Meanwhile, a team caught his friend Rahul and examined him,” added the officer.
Sources said Delhi Police started suspecting Vishal and Rahul after the latter gave a different version, according to which the two men who were purportedly fighting on the road sustained injuries. Vishal confessed he and the other accused were staying at a rented accommodation in Burari where he accidentally fired at himself.
“The pistol fell on his leg. The bullet passed through this leg. While he was trying to get the bullet out, another bullet fired and hit his hand,” said a source. Senior officers said a team went to the apartment and found pellets and blood. “After a long interrogation, Rahul revealed he and his friends were planning to loot delivery agents. On June 24-25, we even caught Usman (25) after identifying him,” said the source.
Usman, who earlier worked as a delivery executive, was released after he was questioned. He admitted Vishal had shot himself and led the police to the weapon.
Police had almost shut the case but then, the news of Pragati Maidan tunnel robbery broke out.
“CCTVs were checked and it was found that Usman was involved,” said an officer, adding that Vishal’s involvement was also confirmed. The tip was shared with Crime Branch which then made the arrests. Police caught Pradeep and Amit from Varanasi. As of now, Vishal will be in police custody for allegedly misleading police, using illegal weapon and lodging a false complaint. Charges will be later framed against him in the robbery case, said police.
