The men in the picture are not stuntmen in a movie sequence. Entirely at home at 70-100 ft above the ground, the men, looking like skydivers against the blue sky if you miss the wires, are workers from the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) fixing high-tension cables for a new power sub-station.

So much at ease were these workers carrying out the risky job, it appeared that they could even have lunch dangling in the air.

The work is part of HVPN’s plan to upgrade its transmission network to overcome power shortages and outages. The company plans to set up four new sub-stations in Sectors 4, 20, 33 and 57.

The men are fixing power cables for a new 220-kV sub-station in Sector-20 that will serve the Udyog Vihar area, where HPVN has faced criticism for frequent loadshedding and outages.

Officials said transmission lines for the other three sub-stations will be completed by the end of August. While the sub-station at Sector-4 will be of 66 kV, the ones at sectors 33 and 57 will be of 220 kV each.

The four sub-stations will be connected via high-tension cables to the 400-kV multi-circuit tower in Sector-72.

Besides, HVPN is planning to upgrade sub-stations at Pataudi, Pachgaon and Farooq Nagar.

The demand for power in Gurgaon is rising by 15-17 per cent every year. In the first week of June this year, the demand crossed 1,650 MV while the existing infrastructure can only handle a load of about 1,700 MV, lending urgency to the task of power infrastructure upgradation. Gurgaon’s power demand is likely to cross 1,900 MV by 2015.
