Her flat sealed,59-year-old leaves note for MCD in suicide bid

A former school administrator attempted suicide by taking an overdose of a medicine outside her house in Vasant Vihar on Wednesday afternoon.

A former school administrator attempted suicide by taking an overdose of a medicine outside her house in Vasant Vihar on Wednesday afternoon.

Chandra Thakur (58) has reportedly been suffering from depression for the past six months, after the MCD in 2010 sealed her DDA flat, where she had been living for 22 years.

She had been living in a rented house in Mehrauli after her Vasant Vihar house was sealed.

Her relatives said Thakur had gone to her Vasant Vihar house in the morning and had carried a marker and a bottle of medicine with her. Outside the sealed flat,Thakur scribbled her suicide note on the wall and then emptied the bottle of medicine. A relative found her lying unconscious on the staircase near her flat.

Thakur was put on ventilator support in a hospital and later shifted to the ICU.

The suicide note names the MCD,the RWA and three neighbours.

“There are total 120 flats with unauthorised construction in the area, then why only 1 flat was sealed? Why is MCD not taking any action for all the other flats? You can only cremate my body after MCD de-seals my flat,” the note read.

Her husband Surinder Singh Thakur said the third-floor flat was allotted to him in 1988. In 2010,his wife decided to extend the flat by covering the balcony and making two additional rooms on the terrace.

“When you are allotted the third-floor,you automatically get the terrace with it. Chandra wanted to construct two rooms as my son was getting married, but a neighbour argued that the terrace is common property and if we construct additional rooms, she will get them demolished.”

The discussions over additional construction happened when Surinder was in Libya for work,he said.

“My wife was dealing with the neighbours alone,as I was abroad. My children are also settled abroad. Every day,the neighbours used to harass my wife because of which she slipped into depression,” he said.

Thakur went ahead with the construction. “We later reached a compromise,” said Surinder. But a neighbour complained to the MCD.

“She lodged a complaint that I had illegally constructed a structure on the terrace. Our house was sealed and my wife was totally shattered. She was very attached to the house,” Surinder said.

An MCD spokesperson said: “We were not given any official information and we are awaiting an official report from the deputy commissioner. Necessary action will be taken accordingly.”
