A suspected member of the Hashim Baba gang was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle in Northeast Delhi’s Seelampur area late on Thursday night. The duo fired more than a dozen bullets at the victim, Misbah (22), said police.
According to police, at 10.40 pm, a firing incident was reported at Seelampur police station. “On reaching the spot near Jama Masjid, Seelampur, Misbah was found injured. He was taken to JPC hospital but was declared dead by attending doctors. Misbah was a resident of Jaffarabad,” police said.
“Forensic teams are gathering evidence from the scene of crime. A case under relevant sections has been registered at Seelampur police station,” police said.
During a preliminary investigation, police said, Misbah was found involved in seven criminal cases related to murder, attempt to murder robbery and Arms Act. He was recently released from jail on bail, police added.
“It is suspected that Mishbah’s murder was a fallout of gang rivalries. With the help of the CCTV police are trying to establish the identity of the accused,” an officer said.
The incident took place near the residence of the Hashim Baba.
Baba, who has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 2019, had been allegedly involved in the illegal businesses of gangster Abdul Nasir, from extortion, and contract killings to illegal betting.
He is currently associated with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. According to sources, Lawrence needed Baba’s name to ring in the Delhi underworld circle. Baba allegedly had control of the arms supply chain in the NCR and people who knew the Northeast area and influential businessmen around Delhi.
Baba was allegedly involved in the murder of a gym owner in Greater Kailash in September, 2024. His wife, Zoya Khan, was also arrested in connection with the case last year.
Baba also allegedly orchestrated a shooting at Karkardooma court in 2016 to eliminate rival gangster Chenu Pehelwan.
In 2019, a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act was registered against Baba and the Abdul Nasir gang by the Crime Branch.
