Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jagdeep Singh was arrested Sunday for allegedly beating up and threatening the manager of a waste management company, hired on a contract basis by the area’s civic body.

Singh was initially released on bail without “fulfilling” the legal formalities but was called back by police to complete them. Before he was called by police a second time, the Hari Nagar MLA tweeted saying news of his arrest was a “rumour”.

Singh had also filed a counter complaint. Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Pushpendra Kumar told The Indian Express that Singh was arrested under sections 323 (causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the IPC.

“His arrest was made after he was questioned. As it was a bailable offence, he was granted bail. But we called him back as he had not signed several legal papers. He was released after all formalities were completed,” said the DCP.

Police said the incident took place on May 21. Some locals approached the complainant, Mohit, asking to borrow his truck for Shab-e-Baraat celebrations and he refused. The locals then forcibly took the truck, leading to a heated argument between them and employees of the waste management company.

“Soon, Singh intervened and a scuffle broke out. Singh allegedly thrashed Mohit. A case was registered on May 23,” said a police officer.

While police claimed he had been arrested, Singh tweeted that he was at home and that news of his arrest was a rumour.

AAP spokesperson Deepak Bajpai said, “It is a non-cognisable offence. How can he be arrested? People are spreading lies. There was no arrest.”

According to AAP, Singh had asked Mohit to clean up a Muslim burial ground. When he refused, Singh cleaned it up himself and asked him to dispose of the dry leaves. Following the incident, the contractor filed a complaint, said sources. Despite several attempts, Singh could not be reached for a comment.

Singh is the seventh AAP MLA to be arrested since the party came to power.
