To keep onion price under check in the Capital, the Delhi government has banned its sale to areas outside the city from wholesale markets.

The decision was taken at a meeting held on Thursday attended by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Food and Civil Supply Minister Haroon Yusuf.

“The government has decided not allow the flow of onions from the wholesale markets,” a senior official said after the meeting.

Over the last couple of days, retail prices of onion jumped from Rs 15 to Rs 35 per kg. The government is also considering a proposal to open dedicated outlets across the city to sell onions. Delhi gets its supply of onions from Maharashtra, which is currently reeling under floods. This has led to massive shortage, prompting the government to take precautions.
