Shopkeepers and residents of GK-1,N-Block market on Tuesday staged a protest against the MCD for constructing a toilet-cum-coffee shop in the market’s parking area.

N-Block Market Traders’ Association president Manish Gupta said,“They are building on an area covering 1200 sq ft to 1500 sq ft,which is way too big. We have heard that besides the toilet-cum-coffee shop,a kiosk for Commonwealth Games tickets would also be set up. About 40 per cent of the parking area will be consumed if this structure is made.”

The market association is concerned that a shortage of parking space may demotivate shoppers from coming to this market. Rajiv Kakria,a resident of GK-I,said: “We need parking space,a post-office,a good Kendriya Bhandar. Creating world-class toilets doesn’t mean that you create problems.”

“The market already has coffee shops and every shop has a bathroom. A public urinal already exists. There is no need to build a toilet-cum-coffee shop. It is a waste of public funds,” added another resident.

“The designs used for construction are part of the project’s first phase and are temporary. Once the construction is over,MCD will analyse them and pick up the most suitable one. The others will be done away with,” said an official.
