A 25-year-old man and his five-year-old nephew were killed Wednesday evening after the balcony of a dilapidated Economically Weaker Section (EWS) flat collapsed on them while they were buying groceries at a local shop in the building in Ghaziabad.

Atul Kumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shalimar Garden, Ghaziabad, said the deceased child has been identified as Vansh, and his uncle as Akash.

“The Tulsi Niketan chowki of Tilamod Police station was informed at around 8.30 pm that the balcony of an old dilapidated EWS building has collapsed, and two people are suspected to be under the debris,” said Singh.

Singh said that based on the information, a police team was rushed to the spot and removed the two injured from the debris. The victims were rushed to the nearby Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where the doctor declared them dead. “We have learnt that they had gone to buy some groceries from the shop when the rooftop fell over them. Further investigation is underway,” he said.

Vinod Kasna, the ex-councillor of Tulsi Niketan, where the accident took place, said that the house belongs to Sabina Khan. Kasna said a toilet was built on the balcony of the building which collapsed. “The child was dead on the spot, and the uncle was taken to the hospital,” said Kasna.

“The Ghaziabad Development Authority had built these houses 35 years ago, but it did not work on their maintenance. The houses were allotted to those below the poverty line. It is the carelessness of GDA,” said the ex-councillor.

On March 18, the Ghaziabad Development Authority approved a proposal to redevelop 2,292 flats and 60 shops, which were dilapidated and were declared unfit for occupancy.
