A head constable posted at Ghaziabad’s Loni police station has been suspended and is absconding after his alleged role in a car-lifting racket came to light after the arrest of four members of the Salmani gang earlier this month.
Police said the gang, under the head constable’s directions, stole more than 50 luxury cars from Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country, but no FIR has been registered yet.
On September 1, the Ghaziabad Police had arrested four members of the gang — identified as Mohammad Chand, Sufiyan, Uves, and Brijmohan alias BM — from Loni. Seven stolen cars, fake number plates, and electronic devices used for theft were recovered from them.
During questioning, the accused disclosed that they had stolen 50 to 60 vehicles so far, selling them in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP and Jharkhand.
Police said the gang members revealed that the head constable was the one who sent details of specific vehicles on WhatsApp. The gang would then steal the targeted car and park it based on the constable’s instructions. After the cars were parked, the gang’s role would end, investigators said. It was the head constable who ensured delivery of the stolen vehicles to receivers through his own network. “The entire operation was being run by the constable. He used to get demands from different states and then activate the gang,” said an officer.
The car theft racket surfaced as Ghaziabad Police were probing the theft of a Brezza car from the Link Road police station area. To track it, police scanned over footage of 300 CCTV cameras installed across a 25-km stretch before locating the vehicle parked.
Additional CP Alok Priyadarshi said, “The role of the accused head constable is being investigated. He has been suspended. A report has also been sought on his previous postings.”
