Around 700 constables, set to graduate from the city’s Police Training College (PTC) in Jharoda Kalan, will now undergo fresh training on how to salute their superiors and wear uniforms properly, among other things. Following the three-day re-training programme beginning January 29, the constables will again sit for a retest in the first week of February.
The order to send the constables for re-training classes came on Monday following an allegation by a constable that an “instructor deliberately failed him” because he did not salute him in the correct manner.
Last week, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi received an anonymous letter from a constable undergoing training at the PTC. In the letter, the constable complained to the police chief that he would commit suicide because an “instructor… had failed him for not saluting him in the correct manner”.
The constable alleged that many other constables at the training academy had similar complaints. Sources said after going through the letter, Bassi asked top officers at the PTC to look into the matter. According to sources, an informal preliminary inquiry was conducted into the matter.
Following the inquiry, an order was passed on Monday to re-train all the constables on the correct way of saluting, among others.
“Beginning January 29, for three days the constables will be taught certain things like how they should speak or stand in an upright position. This has been done to ensure transparency. The retest is being held on February 4. This is a way of giving them a second chance,” a police officer said.
