Six armed and masked dacoits allegedly robbed cash and jewellery worth Rs 17.5 lakh from the house of a retired Ghaziabad degree college principal. Police said the incident took place early on Monday morning,when the assailants broke open the front door of Sukhbir Singhs home in Vasundhara and stole valuables at gunpoint. Singh was the principal of Shambu Dayal College and lives with his wife.
Police said that policemen in a nearby PCR van nabbed one of the accused as he was trying to escape. Senior police officials said,At around 2.30 am,six masked men broke into Singhs house,woke up the sleeping couple and asked them to show where the cash and jewellery was,at gunpoint. Each of them had a tamancha (country-made pistol). They stole Rs 2.5 lakh in cash,and jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh.
Police officials said that constables in a PCR van posted nearby were able to apprehend one of the suspects immediately after the robbery and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs six lakh from him. The accused has been identified as Mithun,a resident of Ghaziabad. After they exited the house,the six men split up in different directions and tried to escape on foot. Police constables stationed in the PCR van got suspicious when they saw Mithun walking quickly with a bag. When they stopped him,he tried to run away. The policemen gave chase,apprehended him and recovered part of the stolen jewellery. Shiv Shankar Yadav,Superintendent of Police (City),announced rewards of Rs 5,000 each for the three policemen who nabbed the accused
Senior police officials also said that it was suspected that this gang had been in operation for close to two years. We are interrogating Mithun and hope to identify other members of the gang very soon.
