A Delhi court has ordered a man, sentenced to 20 days in jail for drink driving,to assist the police at busy traffic signals for five days as a punishment. Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Suresh Chand Rajan ordered Ramesh Kumar, who had been sentenced to 20 days in jail by a magisterial court for driving under influence,to report to Southwest Delhis Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in the morning for five days for assisting police at busy traffic signals. The DCP will depute him to assist the traffic police personnel on duty at any busy signal under his jurisdiction. He can help in managing or diverting traffic from 10 am to 5 pm for five days, the court said, adding that he will report to DCP (Traffic) from August 9 morning. Kumar had appealed in the Sessions court seeking leniency after a magisterial court had sentenced him to 20 days in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on June 9 for driving his car under influence on Dwarka road. Kumars counsel told the ASJ that he was not aware of the consequences of pleading guilty. The Sessions court modified the sentence, stating that since Kumar had no criminal history and was the only breadwinner in his family,it would meet the ends of justice if he is given an opportunity to mend himself.
