Fog throws rail, air traffic out of gear

Dense fog disrupted both rail and air traffic on Sunday.

Dense fog disrupted both rail and air traffic on Sunday. Till late evening, over 85 trains were running well behind schedule,26 were cancelled and the timings of over 36 trains had to be rescheduled.

At the Indira Gandhi International Airport,Low Visibility Procedures were implemented from 8 pm on Saturday to 8.30 am on Sunday, leading to diversion of seven flights and cancellation of two others.

Though the Railways made helpline numbers available to check updates, the stations remained crowded.

Ramcharan Yadav, whose train to Patna (New Delhi-Rajendra Nagar Rajdhani Express) was cancelled, shuttled around the New Delhi railway station looking for an alternative. “My relative is unwell, but even the train for tomorrow has been cancelled. All the other trains are booked and I cannot afford a flight,” he told Newsline.

Four trains scheduled for Monday, all of which are east-bound,have already been cancelled. A source said east-bound trains have the highest ridership and a large number of passengers are affected by the cancellation.

“Helplines are operational at all large stations under the Northern Railways. Personal enquires and announcements through the public address system are functional round the clock. The train enquiry system on 139 also provides related information to passengers,” said an official spokesperson of the Northern Railways, pointing out the measures in place to assist passengers.
