Focus on students, not Batla: new Jamia V-C

Jamia Millia Islamia’s new Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung on Friday called it a “fallacious argument” that the university should have only career academics as its vice-chancellor.

Jamia Millia Islamia’s new Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung on Friday called it a “fallacious argument” that the university should have only career academics as its vice-chancellor.

The retired IAS officer, who assumed charge on Thursday, today told mediapersons: “I don’t think it is any different from what I have done before. Many great universities of the world have had people from outside academia.”

While a large chunk of questions was about the encounter at Batla House last September,Jung said he is not fully aware of the incident as he was in England at the time. “I haven’t read the report on Batla,” he said. He added that he does not want to get “diverted”,for his focus will remain on students’ welfare.

Jung did not elaborate on his plans for the university. “I am still new — it is only my second day,” he said. “Please give me a few weeks’ time.” Jung also praised the work done by his predecessor Professor Mushirul Hasan.
