Five Delhi policemen from the Special Task Force were arrested on Friday for allegedly beating to death a 47-year-old man in the Dhanari area of Sambhal,Uttar Pradesh.
Kushirams son Raju told police that the Delhi policemen picked up his father from their home in Sunwar Sarai on Friday morning to question him in a theft case. They allegedly took Kushiram to an isolated place,nearly two kilometres from their house,and beat him up.
Based on Rajus complaint,an FIR was filed at Dhanari police station against the five policemen Assistant Sub-Inspector Satish Chand,Head Constable Vijay Singh and constables Praveen Kumar,Sandeep and Satendra on the charge of murder. The UP Police have also seized the two cars which were allegedly used by the five to travel to Sambhal.
Meanwhile,the residents of the area gheraoed the Dhanari police station. The situation was brought under control after senior officers assured the protesters that action would be taken against the Delhi policemen.
SHO of Dhanari police station Rajdeep Singh Yadav said the five policemen had not informed the local police before picking up Kushiram on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle. However,the five told Sambhal police that while they were taking Kushiram to Delhi,he started feeling uneasy and later died. In the meantime,a crowd of residents gathered at the spot. Fearing attack,they went to the local police station.
DCP (New Delhi) S B S Tyagi said Kushirams post-mortem report did not reveal any external injuries and heart attack was believed to be the cause of his death.
Our men had informed the sarpanch of the village and were taking the man to the local police station when he suffered an epileptic attack. The villagers were present at the spot when he suffered the attack. The man was offered water,but he passed away. There were protests and our men were arrested for no fault. We have been coordinating with the UP Police. We will approach the court for bail in the case, Tyagi said.
Tyagi also said Khusiram had been arrested for allegedly receiving stolen motorcycles.
Sambhal Circle Officer Amar Singh said Kushiram,a farmer,had purchased the motorcycle nearly a year ago from a local resident.
