Finalise salary hike for prosecutors within 2 months,HC tells govt

A division bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and S P Garg asked the government to provide public prosecutors (PPs) and additional public prosecutors (APPs) computers with printers and the services of stenographers within two weeks.
Directing the government to finalise its decision on the salary hike of prosecutors on a par with those in other states within two months,the bench also asked the Union Public Service Commission to complete the process to fill all vacancies for the posts within six months.
At present,there are 225 PPs in various trial courts against a sanctioned strength of 278.
The court order came after Delhi governments Standing Counsel Najmi Waziri told the bench that the prosecutors will be provided with Rs 35,000 each for purchasing a laptop of their choice.
He also said it would make available a special online search system for prosecutors to help them in preparing their cases.
In a status report,submitted to the court earlier,the government had said that in order to ease the workload of prosecutors,it will provide 18 stenographers and each district will have two stenographers at least.
According to the report,a prosecutor on an average handles more than 3,000 cases a year.
The report also said to save the travelling time of prosecutors,the government has already arranged six cars for them and it would arrange six more.
The court earlier had taken suo-motu cognisance of the matter after it was found that around 10 prosecutors leave every year due to poor working conditions.
