Brought to Bundelkhand University (BU) in Jhansi by the Delhi Police on Wednesday in connection with his migration certificate, former Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar conceded that he had set foot in the university for the first time.

“Tomar was asked which course he studied here. He said he has come here for the first time,” varsity’s registrar Akhilesh Chandra told The Indian Express. Chandra was among the university officials in whose presence Tomar was questioned by police at the university premises from 11.30 am to 5.30 pm on Wednesday, after being brought from Delhi by train.

Chandra said Tilka Manjhi University recently wrote to BU. “They requested us to check if the migration certificate number 156, issued on April 20, 1993, was indeed in Tomar’s name. So we checked our records and found that during that period, in those months, the number series on migration certificates was 7001-7100. We also checked migration certificate number 156 and it was found to be issued in somebody else’s name. So we told them that it was not in Tomar’s name,” Chandra said.

“On Wednesday too, the Delhi Police inquired about the migration certificate and looked at the university records. But they just had the number of the certificate and not the document,” he said.

Over the past few days, Tomar has been grilled by police at Avadh University in Faizabad and at Tilka Manjhi University. At the latter, students pelted him with eggs, tomatoes and ink “for bringing a bad reputation to the university”. At Faizabad, Tomar had failed to identify the science labs, the teachers, staff or any students who were at Saket college between 1986-88 — the period in which Tomar claimed he had completed his BSc.
