Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kerjiwal Friday announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of those who were killed following a blast at a paint factory in North Delhi’s Alipur. The incident, which took place Thursday evening, claimed 11 lives and left four seriously injured.
The CM, who visited the location, also ordered an inquiry into the incident to ascertain why there was alleged delay in the arrival of fire tenders at the site. Delegations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress also visited the location and later, pointed fingers at the AAP Delhi government, holding it responsible for lapses which led to it.
Meanwhile, in addition to relief for the next of kin of the victims, Kejriwal also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for two injured persons who suffered major injuries while two others, who had minor injuries, will be given Rs 20,000 each.
“We will fully assess the government’s policy regarding the shops and houses that were burnt. I just had a word with the DM, and the loss incurred will be compensated as per the government’s policy,” Kerjiwal said following the visit.
“It will also be investigated how such a combustible factory was running in a residential area…I will order an inquiry into it and whoever is guilty of this, will not be spared,” he added.
After interacting with the locals in Alipur, Kejriwal in a post on X, said, “The fire that broke out here yesterday is a matter of great sadness. They are saying that there was a paint factory, and we know how inflammable paint is, and due to the fire, the chemicals in it started flowing into the drains and everything in the surrounding area caught fire…”
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, following his visit, expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, alleging that the incident was the result of “corruption” in the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
“It is a matter of investigation as to how a dangerous factory was running in such a (densely) populated area,” Sachdeva said, announcing assistance of Rs 50,000 to the family of each deceased for funeral expenses, and Rs 25,000 for help in the treatment of the injured.
Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely said, “Had the Fire Brigade reached the Alipur fire accident site on time, and had the injured got timely medical help, the lives of 11 dead people could have been saved…The compensation amount announced by the government is inadequate…”
