Indian cricket’s aggressive right hander Virender Sehwag and Olympic bronze medallist Sushil Kumar will soon add oomph and muscle to the freshly thought-up umbrella alumni association of nearly one thousand Delhi government schools.

The Directorate of School Education,in a first, has conceived this association — the DGS (Delhi Government School) Alumni Association — to try and unite the millions of former government school students, some of whom are almost hundred years old.

Education department officials hope Viru and Sushil will be the ‘Pied Pipers’ and bring in the rest — “the many men and women of talent who have excelled in all fields including sports, politics, medicine, engineering, law, education, etc.”

An official said: “Virender Sehwag and Sushil Kumar on the alumni list will be a good thing for us… The aim is to bring all alumni together — including Viru and Sushil — on a single common platform where they will be able to renew their association with their old school and get an opportunity to encourage, motivate and help the students studying there at present.”

Though a few government schools across the Capital have their own alumni base that includes various IAS,IPS officers who live near the school, officials said such a larger, broader association is a recent move. Sehwag is a former student of Government Co-Ed Senior Secondary School,G-Block,Vikaspuri,while Sushil Kumar has studied at the Government Boy’s Senior Secondary School,Tulsi Nagar. Several principals said that Sehwag and Kumar’s association would serve as examples and “motivate the present lot of students”. “Despite studying in government schools, they have made it to the top in their fields,” a principal said.

Registration forms to join the association are now available.

“We want more and more students to come forward,” Education department officials said, while displaying the forum’s web invitation that has on it the beaming faces of the two sportsmen.
