Eye on property, man hires killers to get rid of 72-year-old father

Police on Thursday arrested a 42-year-old man for murdering his father with the help of two contract killers he had hired in South Delhi.

Police on Thursday arrested a 42-year-old man for murdering his father with the help of two contract killers he had hired in South Delhi. Police also recovered the murder weapon — a blood-stained knife — and the mobile phone of the deceased from his room.

According to police, the accused, identified as Milan Kumar, had two hired contract killers — Deepak Dalal alias Chaura (23) and Satyawan (23) to kill his father,Dharam Singh (72),who too had retired from the IAF as a driver a few years ago. Singh was found dead on November 27 in his house at Masoodpur village in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area.

“Singh’s body was found in his room located in the same compound where his son stayed with his wife and children. He had 27 stab wounds on body and was declared brought dead at the hospital,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma.

She said the family’s reaction to the murder was “strange” and this alerted the cops to their possible involvement. “They felt he had inflicted these injuries on himself as he used to drink a lot as he was depressed after his wife’s death eight years ago. However,a person cannot stab himself in the back and Singh’s room showed no signs of struggle. So robbery was ruled out,” Sharma said.

Investigations revealed that Milan had sour relations with his father and that Singh had filed numerous police complaints against his son. Police also recovered a copy of Singh’s will that barred Milan from his property, which included his South Delhi house and three rent-yielding shops, and his Armed Forces pension.

On interrogation,Milan confessed that Singh was the owner of all the property and used to manage the household expenses himself. Irritated by his father’s behaviour,he contacted his cousin Bholu who in turn introduced him to Deepak and Satyawan.

Milan reportedly offered Deepak a shop in Masoodpur for killing his father and the three planned the murder a month in advance. “Deepak and Satyawan stayed at Milan’s house a month before the murder. They monitored the activities of Singh and then planned the killing,” Sharma said.

On the day of the murder,Satyawan covered Singh’s mouth to stifle his screams and Deepak stabbed him 27 times to ensure his death. Milan had reportedly warned Deepak that if Singh survived,he would be surely recognised.

Police said Milan is unemployed and has been involved in three criminal cases in the past, including one murder case. After his wife left him,he married his late brother’s wife. Milan has two children by her.

“He had thought that after Singh’s death, though his sister would get a part of the house as her share,he would still have enough left for himself to live comfortably. She was unaware of Milan’s plans, though,” police said.
