Former chief minister Arvind KejriwalFormer chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who sat on seat number 1 for the last 10 years in the Legislative Assembly, was allotted seat 41 in the House on Thursday, following his resignation as the CM. The seat of the new CM, Atishi, was also changed – from 19 to 1.
Former deputy CM Manish Sisodia, the second-in-command in Kejriwal’s Cabinet who used to occupy seat 2 right next to Kejriwal, was allotted seat 40. However, both Kejriwal’s and Sisodia’s seats are located in the first row, on the right side of the Speaker.
As per the new seating arrangement, seat 2 was allotted to Saurabh Bharadwaj, who holds the largest number of portfolios, after Atishi. Earlier, he used to sit at seat 8. Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, meanwhile, was allotted seat 8 from his earlier number 2.
Newly-inducted Minister Mukesh Ahlawat was allotted seat 14. Other ministers whose seats have been changed included Vinay Mishra, Ajay Mahawar, Girish Soni, Somnath Bharti, Rituraj Govind and Imran Hussain.
Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, who used to sit on seat 94, was allotted seat 100. “The seating arrangement is the prerogative of the Speaker… Ministers are given seats in the first row and then MLAs as per seniority… It looked like they vehemently allotted seat 40 and 41 to Kejriwal and Sisodia… Otherwise it will look like Kejriwal is still getting the front seats,” Gupta told mediapersons.
Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, meanwhile, maintained that the seating arrangement is not a “hard and fast” rule. “The ruling party sits on right side and the Opposition on the left of the Speaker… In the first row, seat one is occupied by the CM and then come the ministers… the rows are numbered vertically… After the ministers, MLAs are allotted seats as per seniority in the first row. There were others seats also but we offered them seat 41, they accepted… the seats are on the first row only,” he said.
