Almost a month after 28-year-old Shashank Yadav was found hanging in a womens restroom in Noida stadium on March 13,police are yet to piece together the sequence of events preceding his death.
In the complaint submitted to Noida police, which formed the basis of the murder case,Yadavs family had said that Shashank, who was an engineer with Engineers India Limited (EIL),was aiding a CBI investigation and was receiving death threats because of his role.
As Newsline reported earlier,Yadav was appointed as the nodal officer in an investigation into fake certificates allegedly submitted by Turkish firm Fernas, which reportedly allowed them to bag contracts of oil and natural gas, valued at more that Rs 2,000 crore.
Police officers investigating the case said it was proving difficult to establish the sequence of events in the hours leading to his death. His roommates have confirmed that he was at home till 12.30 am on March 13,after which they went to sleep. His body was found at 6 am,and we dont yet know what happened in the six-hour interval. None of those questioned, including the guards in the colony and Noida stadium, seem to have noticed him. This is proving to be the most difficult aspect of the investigation. Shashanks call detail records do not show any calls in those six hours, which could have prompted him to leave the house at that hour, an officer said.
Preetinder Singh,Senior Superintendent of Police,Noida, said,We have not ruled out any angle so far. The post mortem report has established that the cause of death is hanging. We have recovered all the belongings from the bag found on his body. His laptop, the data cable used in the hanging, and a knife that was in his bag, have all been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further examination. We are currently in the process of questioning EIL officials and his friends.
Investigators are looking at Yadavs movements the night before the murder, which they hope will give them some answers. Yadav was supposed to give a written statement to the CBI on March 13,the morning on which his body was found. The afternoon before that, around 2 pm,CBI officers had told him that he could leave the EIL office and work on his statement because nothing could be changed once the statement was submitted.
Another employee, who was similarly assisting the CBI probe and was to give a statement was told the same. While the other employee left office early,Yadav left around 9.45 pm. He first exited the office around 9.05 pm,but immediately went back in. He then came out three minutes later, but went in again. When he finally came out 25 minutes later,he had a file with him. This can be seen in the CCTV footage at the EIL office. Therefore,we are questioning his colleagues to see why he went in and out so many times, an officer said.
The officer added that five others were assisting the probe, but Yadav was the point person and was a signatory on more than 3,000 documents recovered by the CBI from the EIL office.
