The Delhi government has revived a proposal to construct a 14-kilometre elevated road over the Najafgarh drain to reduce travel time between southwest and northwest Delhi. This will be on the lines of the Barapullah Road.
The public works department (PWD) floated the road plan before the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but it was put on hold following technical objections. PWD officials have now sought a fresh approval from the government to start the proposed road.
The plan has been to build a dedicated road over one of citys biggest stormwater channels, the Najafgarh drain, from Najafgarh in southwest Delhi to Meera Bagh near Shalimar Bagh in the northwest of the city.
The project was quite similar to the elevated road constructed over the Barapullah drain to transport athletes from east Delhi to south Delhi during the Commonwealth Games,an official said.
We have prepared a detailed note and sent it to the chief secretary for approval before we can start work fully, a PWD engineer said.
The idea was first mooted in May 2006 when the then Urban Development Minister A K Walia announced the plan along with a slew of other new road links in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. But it was put on hold because it could not be decided how the road would be integrated with the existing roads.
A senior PWD official said the popularity of the Barapullah Road has woken up the people concerned about the Najafgarh proposal.
We expect the road link over the Najafgarh drain to not only ease travel woes of commuters but also decongest several key roads in the area, the official said.
