When Deepak, 32, the key accused in the Kohat Enclave elderly couple murder case, was allegedly planning his escape, he did not know that his phone conversation overheard by an auto driver would help police trace him.

While boarding an auto after allegedly robbing and killing the couple earlier this week, he was discussing plans on a call to flee to Patna after hiding in an old age home in the Capital for a few days. What he did not know was that the conversation was being overheard by the auto driver.

Deepak, who worked as an attendant with the couple for just two days before allegedly committing the crime, was arrested on Saturday morning from the old age home in Dwarka Mor, said police.

The couple was found dead in their third-floor flat in Northwest Delhi’s Kohat Enclave Tuesday. Mohinder Singh Talwar, 72, had been strangled to death while Daljeet Kaur, 70, had injuries on her head and strangulation marks on her neck. The bodies were found in a decomposed state.

“CCTV footage showed Deepak boarding an auto after the incident. Using the number plate of the auto, the owner was traced,” said DCP (Northwest) Bhisham Singh.

But it took police a while to trace the vehicle. “The auto had been sold seven times. The seventh owner was the one who dropped the accused at Dwarka Mor. He overheard the accused saying he was going to stay at an old age home nearby,” a police officer privy to the matter said.

On Tuesday, police arrested the elderly couple’s former attendant, Ravi Kishore, 37, from his Uttam Nagar residence for allegedly plotting the crime. He had recommended Deepak to the family. “Ravi used to work for the couple as a nurse. He then left the job. The couple then asked him to work for them again, but he refused,” a senior police official said.

Mohinder and Daljeet were found dead after the family’s driver told their elder son, Charanpreet Singh, that he had rung the doorbell several times to no response. Charanpreet and his brother live in the building next door. According to police, the robbery and the killings took place in the early hours of Sunday.

“Ravi conspired with the main accused to rob the couple as he knew about the jewels and cash in the house. They decided to divide the proceeds,” the DCP said.

Ravi allegedly told police that he only asked Deepak to rob, and not kill the couple, a senior police officer said.

“Call recordings of Ravi revealed he had made an elaborate plan to loot the house with Deepak. However, when Deepak said that if the couple interrupted his plans to rob them clean, he would murder them, Ravi replied by saying it’s Deepak’s call,” a police officer privy to the investigation claimed.
