During two hours of play,Ananya pockets three titles

The only thing on Ananya Nagar’s mind after winning three titles at the Pt Tirath Ram Badminton tournament was rest.

The only thing on Ananya Nagar’s mind after winning three titles at the Pt Tirath Ram Badminton tournament was rest. The 15-year-old played four matches in Noida before her three final matches of the U-16,U-19 and the women’s final on Wednesday.

“I’m so exhausted” Nagar said after her win.

The organisers had postponed Ananya’s matches so that she could compete in the FCI scholarship tournament in Noida, but this meant that she had to play her matches on the trot in order for the tournament to finish on time.

After a long traffic jam involving her journey from Noida,Ananya looked tired as she played her first match against Rashmeet in the U-19 final. Rashmeet had a plan to use long shots to keep Ananya moving all over the court.

But her inexperience showed as she failed to make the most and was hitting the shuttle straight back to Ananya, who would respond with an unplayable cross court drop shot.

In the second game Ananya began to fade away and lost, forcing the decider. But held out to a 21-17 win in the last game to win the first of the three crowns on Wednesday.

Almost immediately Ananya was back on the court playing her second final. This time it was the U-16 category. Ishita Solanki looked clearly out of her depth as Ananya demolished her in two straight games 21-9 21-7.

If Ananya was hoping to catch a break, she was in for a shock. Without the mandatary half hour gap,the top ranked Delhi player was facing Rashmeet once again, this time in the women’s final.

She looked totally out of sorts, and lost her footing many times as she conceded first game 20-22.

“I was frustrated. I really needed a break. I lost my cool and started hitting the shuttle long or straight into the net” said Nagar after the match.

But then she found her focus just in time and turned up the tempo against Rashmeet whose reverted to a cascade of unforced errors. Ananya won the next game 21-12 and the last 21-13 to complete the treble win in two hours time.

While Ananya attributed her triumph to the effort she put in,she also acknowledged another truth. Ananya began her playing career in Kerala where she says it would have been far more difficult to win. ‘

“Its true, there is much less competition in Delhi,” she added

And after her marathon effort Ananya can’t look forward to getting much rest any time too soon. She has to attend a trial on Thursday to seal her berth for a tournament in Tokyo and the All India Junior tournament in two weeks time.

No treble for Rishab

Earlier in the day,14-year-old Rishab Sachdev, failed in his own quest for a treble. Although Rishab, who trains along with Ananya at the Pitampura Sports Complex, won his U-16 and U-19 finals, his style of play which capitalises on deception and drop shots did not threaten the top-ranked Delhi player Amit Sharma. Rishab went down 21-15 21-6 in the men’s final.
