She had a sense that she was being stalked. But she chose to ignore it for fear that her parents would find out. That turned out to be her worst mistake. On November 3,the 19-year-old Delhi University student was abducted and gang-raped by four men in a moving auto. At 4.35 am,the girl was on her way to the mall in Noida where she had been working for the last two months in the sales department. While waiting for her cab, five men in an auto whisked her away to a jungle behind the Indraprastha Power Station where she was raped. She was raped thrice by the auto driver and his three friends. They covered her with a blanket and she remained there till 4 pm without anyone around to save her, said the victims mother. Speaking on the girls behalf, the mother said: My daughter told me that after raping her the auto driver,Ranbir, took pity on her. He then asked his three accomplices to leave and stayed back with the other accused,Munna. But the two raped her again. The accused threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. They fled after taking her cellphone number. Till 4 pm she sat still, shocked and confused. Finally, she mustered enough courage and managed to get herself into an auto and come home, said her mother. I didnt know what to do. Her elder sister and her two younger brothers were told but no one mentioned this to their father, said the mother. Half-an-hour after the victim reached home, she received a call on her cellphone when the accused threatened her again. The family kept silent fearing social stigma. On November 6,a day after Diwali, the phone rang again. This time it was Ranbir the auto driver, enquiring about her condition. I was shocked. How can someone do something as brutal and then show pity? asked the mother. The victims family finally informed the father who registered a complaint. We waited at the station the whole night. The FIR was finally lodged at 5 am the next morning, said the mother. However, even after the case was registered, the mother knew she had to take the matter in her own hands. I asked my daughter for the number the accused called her from. It was an STD booth in Sarai Kale Khan. The mother called back on the number posing as the victim. She pleaded with the accused to take her to a hospital before anyone found out and asked them to arrange for a sum of Rs 5,000. Ranbir promised to come and was arrested at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, she said. DCP (East) K C Dwivedi said they have arrested Ranbir, who is now being questioned about his accomplices. The victims mother said she wants her daughter to continue her studies. She wants to become a teacher and she will. She cant be afraid of society, her tormentors should be.
