DU application process likely to go online next year: V-C

Delhi University’s undergraduate application process might go online from next year. Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental announced this at an interactive session held at the Constitution Club on Tuesday.

“We have one gigabyte of bandwidth now, which is good enough. I hope that from next year, students will be able to fill up forms online though we cannot promise this as yet,” said Pental.

The current admission procedure is a headache to outstation aspirants as thousands of them have to camp in the Capital when the admission season begins to purchase and submit forms.

On the issue of shortage of residential facilities for outstation students,Pental said the construction of two hostels with a capacity of 1,000 students each was underway and would be complete in two to three months.

“We have also requested the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development for help to construct two more hostels,” he said.

The session was presided over by former Union minister and BJP MP Vijay Goel. Goel handed over a memorandum to the V-C,demanding that preference be given to students from Delhi over those coming from outside.

The V-C responded in the negative, saying that any kind of preference was against the tenets of a Centrally funded university, and was constitutionally invalid. “There are so many students who come from distant places, especially Scheduled Tribe students,in search of better educational facilities. They equally deserve to study in the University and this composite set-up is an advantage to the institution,” he said.

Goel also said that the number of seats should be increased for general category students and more colleges should offer evening shifts to accommodate more students.

Pental said making more colleges operate double shifts would be rife with problems, among them the implementation of the semester system, due to which the duration of classes will increase.
