Woman, 22, held for ‘killing’ 9-day-old daughter; didn’t want girl child, say police

A 22-year-old woman was arrested in West Delhi’s Tikri Friday for allegedly killing her nine-day-old daughter, police said.

During questioning, the woman confessed that she killed the infant because she did not wish to have a girl child, said Jimmy Chiram, DCP, Outer district.

The murder came to light Thursday when the woman’s husband filed a complaint against his wife to the police, reporting that he had come home from work to find his daughter’s lifeless body.

The couple had shifted to Delhi in 2019 with the husband’s brother and mother. The father of the child works at a shoe factory in Bahadurgarh as a labourer and the couple has a two-year-old son.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found the child’s body with its throat slit in a room on the second floor and the mother in another room, said police.

The woman was arrested under section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and was taken into judicial custody. The police also claimed to have recovered the knife which was allegedly used to murder the infant.
