A section of teachers at Delhi University (DU) has hit out at the ‘Run for Viksit Bharat’ event scheduled to be held by the varsity on May 8, claiming it is “a violation of the Model Code of Conduct”.

The Indian Express reported Friday that close to 5,000 students would participate, as per varsity Registrar Vikas Gupta. In a statement, the university said the objective of the run was to “bring awareness in society to make Bharat a developed nation by 2047”. The event, the varsity said, is being conducted under the “collective aegis of the University of Delhi and Vikas Bharat Ambassador Club”. However, the meeting held to “decide the outline of the event and organise it successfully” had BJP’s Kuljeet Chahal in attendance. Chahal is the national convener of the Namo app, as well as a member of the New Delhi Municipal Council.

In a statement Friday, the Democratic Teachers’ Front said, “… if the intention was to increase voter awareness, then this event ought to have been organised only with prior permission and involvement of the Election Commission of India; it should not have been used to give a platform to a functionary of the ruling party.”

The Indian National Teachers Congress also objected to the programme and said it has decided to approach the ECI.

However, DU Teachers’ Association president A K Bhagi said, “‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’ is an initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development… In my opinion, Viksit Bharat is the extension of this initiative… It has nothing to do with the general elections… Like others, I find no logic to link a government scheme for promoting a party by any institution or university.”
