Delhi students to get free DTC bus passes

The order has been communicated to the DTC, which will now come out with the modalities and implement the order.

Delhi students will be able to travel on buses free of cost soon. The Department of Education has decided to give free DTC passes to students in the capital.

“We will give free DTC passes to all students to help alleviate their transportation costs. Some students had come into my office requesting me to look into DTC fares. That is  why we decided to take this step,” Education Minister Manish Sisodia said.

According to Sisodia, the move will benefit at least one lakh students in the capital. Students will be able to use the passes in AC and cluster buses as well, he said.

The order has been communicated to the DTC, which will now come out with the modalities and implement the order, a government official said.

In another development, the Cabinet has approved the Education department’s proposal to hike the incentive for outstanding sportspersons from the capital. The annual outlay towards this will be hiked from Rs 6 crore to Rs 10 crore.

According to the Education Department, exceptional performances by athletes from Delhi was the reason for the added incentive.

A list of 27 sportspersons has been put out by the ministry and include names such as wrestler Sushil Kumar, cricketers Unmukt Chand and Vikas Mishra, chess grandmasters Parimarjan Negi and Sahej Grover, international chess master Tania Sachdev, international shooter Ranjan Sodhi, tennis player Yuki Bhambri and table tennis player Neha Aggarwal.

According to the Education Department, the increase in cash incentive will boost the morale of sportspersons.
