Three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs – B S Joon, Praveen Kumar, and Dilip Pandey – Monday wrote to Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena requesting him to convene an urgent meeting during the day to discuss the ‘worsening’ law-and-order situation in the national capital.

The request came after a spate of open shootings and extortion attempts on residents, particularly business owners.

The letter to Saxena reads, “The deteriorating law and order situation and alarming increase in gang-related activities in Delhi is evident from yesterday’s (Sunday) three incidents of firing upon business owners/houses. These incidents of open shooting and extortion attempts upon residents are not only giving a bad name to Delhi but are also detrimental to the reputation of the country, being the capital city.”

The MLAs also stated that this has led to fear among the business community: “Such recent incidents have raised serious concerns among the residents and the business community, and there is an urgent need for action to address this growing menace; every trader/businessman is living under constant fear due to the brazen manner in which these gangs are operating in Delhi. Their family members are constantly thinking about the well-being and safety of their bread-earners… innocent residents and traders in Delhi are not feeling safe, and we believe that this issue, if not addressed promptly, could lead to a further escalation of violence and crime in Delhi, as it is already at an alarming stage.”

The letter also mentions that the issue of the rise in crimes was discussed at length during the recent session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, where many MLAs had raised similar concerns.

Highlighting that the subject of law enforcement in Delhi falls under the control of the Central Government and the L-G, the letter states, “As the subject of ‘Police’ is a reserved subject for NCT of Delhi… we would like to bring this to your knowledge and have a constructive discussion on this burning issue.”
