The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) responded to 281 fire-related emergencies through the night on Diwali, a slight dip from the 290 reported during the same period — between 6 am on Diwali night and 6 am the next day — last year. Officials said of the 281 calls, only 122 were related to firecrackers.
A senior DFS officer said 228 fire-related calls were received from midnight on October 20 to midnight on October 21. This is a decrease from the 318 calls recorded during the same period last year. He added that of these 228 calls, only 81 were related to firecrackers.
However, two massive fires were reported on Diwali from Mohan Garden and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar.
In the first incident, seven people were rescued after a fire broke out in a four-storey residential building in West Delhi’s Mohan Garden. According to DFS officials, the fire was most likely caused by crackers being lit in the vicinity of the building, which ignited domestic items, engulfing the first and second floors of the building.
“Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control by 11.30 pm,” the official said. No casualties were reported.
In another incident, a massive fire broke out in two buildings at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar in Northwest Delhi early Tuesday. Several cars parked near the godowns were gutted. “We rushed 40 fire tenders to the spot. The godowns had automobile repairing tools stored,” a DFS official said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, recorded 26 incidents of fire on Diwali, compared to the 68 reported last year, police said on Tuesday.
Noida Chief Fire Officer Pradeep Kumar said that of 26 fire incidents, 15 were reported in high-rises, five in houses and the rest in factories and shops. The areas from where the incidents were reported included sectors 51, 58, 74 and 76 in Noida, Ecotech 1 and 3 as well as Kasna in Greater Noida and Gaur City in Greater Noida West. No one was injured in these incidents.
