Two South Delhi schools St Georges in Alaknanda and Deepalaya (for underprivileged children) in Kalkaji were among the schools from across the country that received the green schools award on Saturday.
The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) had constituted the award in 2006 as part of its green schools programme. Based on an environmental audit of schools,CSE awards institutions that excel in managing natural resources.
According to CSE,the audit for 2009 found semi-urban and mid-rung schools are the real change-makers in taking up green initiative.
While 10 Delhi schools were shortlisted this year,programme coordinator Sumita Dasgupta said about 5,000 schools from across India took part and 20 greenest among them were awarded.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit,who gave away the awards along with Central Board of Film Certification chairperson Sharmila Tagore,said,There should be few cars and I urge you to use public transport more. She also said the Delhi government is developing cycling and walking tracks as part its eco-friendly initiatives.

* Anubhuti School,Jalgaon,Maharashtra: Effective use of solar power
* DAV Public School,Panipat,Haryana: All-round effort to ensure effective use of natural resources
