Mosquito-borne diseases surge in Delhi: Dengue cases cross 1,600, 65% spike in malaria patients

Delhi is witnessing a significant spike in malaria cases this year, with 430 cases reported as of September 28, marking a 65% increase compared to the 260 cases recorded during the same period last year. Besides the 430 cases, the first nine months of the year have also seen 130 cases that have been recorded with incomplete or wrong addresses.

This surge is even more pronounced when compared to the same period in previous years – 80 cases in 2022, 74 in 2021, and 131 in 2020. Of the 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) zones, the West Zone is the worst hit with 58 cases so far this year.

Chikungunya cases have also seen an increase – 55 cases reported till September 28 – when compared to last year. While 11 cases have been reported in the past week, the south zone is the worst hit with 14 cases. The corresponding period saw six cases in 2022, 29 in 2021, and 35 in 2020. Besides the 55, 39 cases have been recorded with incomplete or incorrect addresses.

Dengue cases, while lower than last year, are still high. Delhi has recorded 1,630 cases as of September 28, a decrease from the 3,119 cases reported during the same period in 2023. The past week has seen 382 cases.

The Najafgarh zone is the worst hit, with 237 cases recorded so far.

The same period saw 631 cases in 2022, 249 in 2021, and 208 in 2020. As many as 721 more cases have been recorded with incomplete addresses.

Although the MCD has been making house visits to check for mosquito breeding, the number of visits is lesser when compared to the last two years, official data revealed. There is a 21% decrease in the number of house visits conducted by this time of the year as compared to last year and a 32% decrease as compared to the year before.

“The situation is under control. Each year, the number of dengue cases is decreasing as compared to last year. We are going to further intensify our mosquito control measures soon,” a senior MCD official said.
