The Delhi Police said they have cracked a case of jewellery theft, reported by two jewellers in Karol Bagh, involving valuables worth over Rs 6 crore by arresting a man from Hooghly in West Bengal. According to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, they recovered 953 gram of gold jewellery from Asadul Mondal during his arrest Saturday.

The case was registered after Sanjay Goyal, a jewellery dealer, reported the theft of 2.7 kilograms of gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.9 crore. The jewellery had been entrusted to Mondal for repair and preparation before an exhibition in Rajasthan. Mondal, who specialised in polishing and stone-setting, disappeared on December 17, along with the jewels.

The scope of the case expanded after a second complaint was filed by Ravikant, another jewellery dealer in Karol Bagh. He reported that Mondal had absconded with 5.5 kilograms of gold jewellery worth Rs 3.9 crore and diamonds valued at Rs 40 lakh. Both complainants said Mondal had been operating from a rented workshop in Beadonpura in Karol Bagh, and had established himself as a reliable craftsman in the area.

The police team deployed traditional police work and technical surveillance to track Mondal’s movements across multiple states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal.

A key breakthrough came when the police analysed call records and other technical data to pinpoint Mondal’s location near Vivekanand College in Haripal in Hooghly. Acting on this lead, the team launched an operation on December 21, and arrested Mondal. A search of his belongings yielded 23 gold jewellery items weighing 953 grams, believed to be part of the stolen goods.

Mondal, originally from Hooghly, had moved to Delhi to work in the jewellery sector, where he specialised in intricate design work and gained the trust of local dealers. However, he allegedly conspired with his associates to steal the entrusted valuables.

Following his arrest, Mondal was produced before a court in West Bengal and subsequently transferred to the custody of the Karol Bagh Police for further investigation.
