From today, all First Information Reports (FIRs) registered in the Capital will be uploaded on the Delhi Polices website, except for those on sensitive issues like terrorist activities, those relating to national security, rape, molestation and kidnapping for ransom.
The move comes two months after the Delhi High Court directed the police to do the same on December 6 last year.
The court had stated that an accused is entitled to a copy of the FIR within 24 hours of its registration, and he/she need not be forced move the court to obtain a copy.
New FIRs from the Delhi Police website http://www.delhipolice.nic.in can be downloaded, and an accused may also avail a copy from the police station by paying Rs 25 for four pages and an extra Rs 10 for every extra page.
In case the police refuse to provide a copy of the FIR (of a case not deemed a sensitive one),the person can approach the Commissioner of Police, who will in turn form a committee to investigate the matter.
A senior police officer said,All police stations have been equipped to register FIRs online. The decision on whether a certain FIR should be made public or not has to be taken by an officer not below the rank of a deputy commissioner of police who will need to inform the area magistrates.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: The accused can approach the police station in person and depute someone else or his lawyer to collect the FIR.
Application forms for procuring the FIRs will be available at all police stations and at the offices of all Deputy Commissioners,he added.
