The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old sharpshooter from the Himanshu Bhau gang after a brief exchange of fire, four days after he allegedly gunned down a rival gang member in Rohtak.
The accused, identified as Deepak Dhankar, a first-time offender, is now under treatment at the BSA Hospital, the police said.
According to the police, Dhankar, allegedly commissioned by foreign-based gangster Himanshu Bhau, shot at Anil Kumar of the Baba gang 15 times.
“Anil Kumar, recently released on bail in a murder case, was shot dead at his native Ritoli village in Rohtak area while he was going to his fields,” said Amit Kaushik, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).
On Tuesday evening, a Special Cell team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjay Dutt laid a trap near Dada Lekhram Chowk, the road towards Jain Nagar adjacent to UER-II, following a tip-off that Dhankar would be crossing the UER-II road at night.
“Around 10.30 pm, the police team spotted the suspect on a motorcycle. The team blocked the road to stop the bike, but due to an imbalance, the accused tripped,” DCP Kaushik said.
Panicked after slipping, Dhankar whipped out a pistol and fired three rounds at the police team.
The police retaliated with two shots, with one of them hitting his leg, the Delhi Police said.
According to a police officer, Bhau and Baba gangs have been at loggerheads since 2019, after Bhau’s fallout with Baba gang leader Ankit Baba aka Lucky over an unpaid EMI of a car.
“The deceased Anil was previously involved in a double murder incident in Ritoli village in which Rohit Bajrang, a cousin of Himanshu Bhau and his uncle Rajender, were killed in March 2022. Deepak killed Anil as revenge for the double murder,” DCP Kaushik said.
