Delhi News Live Updates: Stubble burning, fireworks could spike Delhi AQI beginning next week

It’s that time of the year and the national capital is bracing for a thick layer of smog in just 11 days. Every winter, residents of Delhi-NCR are choked — thanks to a host of factors such as stubble burning, vehicular pollution, and… you guessed it: Diwali crackers. Multiple studies over the last decade have shown the AQI dropping significantly in Delhi.

Moreover, hospitals have shown a marked increase in patients with breathing troubles after Diwali.

The AQI in Delhi has been fluctuating over the last seven days going up to 211, according to private air quality monitor and forecaster AQI.in. The website showed the Delhi AQI at 99 on October 3. It then went down to 77 between October 3 and 4 before rising up to 203 on October 4. The next day, the AQI was 211. On October 6, Delhi managed to improve the AQI to 92 in the evening. The AQI on October 7 recorded the best AQI of 66 in the past seven days and on October 8 the AQI went back past 100 (106).

The Delhi High Court has sought responses from the Centre and the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) on a plea challenging a government order prohibiting discussion, analysis, or circulation of the “contents of question papers of ongoing/held examinations…on social media”.

Delhi News Live Updates: Best October air since 2022 as rain lashes Delhi again

Dark clouds blanketed the Capital on Tuesday as heavy rain brought down the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) to 73, in the ‘Satisfactory’ category — the cleanest reading in over two years for the month of October. The last time Delhi had recorded better air this month was on October 11, 2022, when the AQI was 66.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the last ‘Satisfactory’ day was recorded on October 3 this month, when the AQI was recorded at 88.

The improvement followed widespread showers and gusty winds over Delhi-NCR for two days in a row. This, coupled with winds and minimal incidents of farm fires, aided the dispersal of pollutants. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), south-easterly winds prevailed, with speeds up to 15 kmph and gusts reaching 46 kmph. Read

Two days after a 71-year-old lawyer allegedly hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India B R Gavai inside the Supreme Court, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday said the incident and subsequent online threats and abuse directed at the CJI appeared to be part of a “pre-planned and systematic attempt to browbeat the judiciary”.

“Justice Gavai decided to leave the matter and not act against the person who tried to throw a shoe at him. This is indeed his greatness. However, the whole incident has sent a chilling message to the entire judiciary — that if anyone can get away with throwing a shoe at the CJI, then what to talk of other judges. Are other judges safe?” Kejriwal said in a post on X.
