Delhi News Updates: Day after attack on Rekha Gupta, Delhi gets new Police Commissioner

Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal in a post on X said that CM Rekha Gupta is dedicated to serving the people of Delhi.

"Today, along with all my fellow MPs from Delhi, I met the popular Chief Minister of Delhi, @gupta_rekha, and enquired about her well-being. The chief minister is fine and, as before, is continuously devoted to the service of the people of Delhi," he said in the post.

Delhi BJP MPs met Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and said she would resume her schedule either from Thursday or Friday.

A delegation of seven party MPs called on CM Gupta on Thursday, a day after she was attacked.

According to the ‘Yellow Book’ of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) — which outlines the guidelines for security arrangements for VIPs and VVIPs — a ‘Z’ category protectee is assigned approximately 22 to 25 personnel — including personal security officers (PSOs), escorts, watchers, and eight static armed guards.

CRPF has taken over the security of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following Wednesday’s attack. She has been granted Z Category security, with the CRPF assuming charge from the Delhi Police late last night.

The man accused of assaulting Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh earlier this year due to his love for monkeys, according to sources.

Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakriya told the Delhi Police during interrogation that after the inauguration of the Ram Mandir, the administration launched a campaign to remove monkeys from the temple premises. Sources say Sakriya told the police that he travelled from Rajkot to Ayodhya, offered prayers at the temple, and fed the monkeys.

This is the third such incident in four days when schools have received bomb threats. On Monday, 32 schools across the city received hoax bomb threats.

On Wednesday, around 50 schools in NCR received bomb threats via e-mail, which after searches, were declared a hoax.

In other news, the Delhi High Court, while hearing a plea by a private school against readmitting a child diagnosed with autism, remarked Tuesday that a task society should bear is that of ensuring the inclusion of neurodivergent children into the mainstream.

A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, was hearing an appeal filed by the GD Goenka school, against a single Judge’s order of July 1, directing the school to readmit the child to an age-appropriate class.

Former Delhi minister and AAP Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj said on X that all parties should unequivocally condemn such acts.

"There is no place for violence in a democracy. We fully slam this incident. Whenever former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was attacked, BJP spokespersons said that people were angry and hence the incidents happened. We are showing a big heart. The people of Delhi are unhappy with Gupta but violence is not the solution. Any kind of violence is not justified," he said.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi says, “This is a shameful act. We’ve long been raising concerns about the law and order situation in the national capital, with crimes like chain snatching on the rise. Now, such an incident has occurred inside the official residence of Delhi’s Chief Minister, which is deeply upsetting."

Recalling a similar incident that happened with Arvind Kejriwal when he was CM, she said that at the time, the BJP seemed to celebrate the situation. "I believe this is not a political issue, no matter who the Chief Minister is, the security of the head of the capital is a serious concern and must be addressed urgently.”

Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa posted on X saying, "Her fearless connect with people and unwavering commitment to public service clearly unsettles the opposition, which is stooping to such shameful tactics. Wishing her strength, safety and a speedy recovery."

Senior AAP leader Atishi posted on X saying, "The attack on Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democracy, there is a place for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence."

It is hoped that the Delhi Police will take the strictest action against the culprits. It is hoped that the Chief Minister is completely safe, she added.

Meanwhile, two schools in Delhi received bomb threat emails Wednesday morning, the second time this week. On Monday, 32 private schools, including DPS Dwarka, received bomb threat emails, which were later declared a hoax.

BJP sources said that Gupta was attacked by a man in his mid-thirties. He first gave the CM some papers during the public hearing and then attacked her, they said.
